My Story

Freddy’s late mother and father were married in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Later, in his early years, Freddy was raised in rural eastern Tennessee with his mother and twin brother. They lived in challenging circumstances in a rural town of 300 until he was eight years old. At that time, Freddy’s mother remarried and they lived in Eastern Tennessee in the Appalachian Mountains. He lived there in a town of 10,000 until he graduated high school. Freddy went to college in Lynchburg, Virginia at age 18, graduating at age 22. He continued to complete a Master’s degree through studies in Fort Worth, Texas and Wake Forest, North Carolina while working in various leadership roles. After graduate school, Freddy began teaching academically part-time while working full-time at significant ministries in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Chicago. During that time, he completed his Ph.D. in Leadership in Louisville, Kentucky. Freddy went on to teach full-time in higher education, first in Kansas City and now in Greater Los Angeles at Biola University.
Freddy holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He holds a Master of Arts Degree (M.A.) degree from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Dr. Cardoza has an earned Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and has previously completed all of the coursework for the Doctor of Education, except dissertation (Ed.D.,ABD).
Freddy served twenty years in various ministry positions in local churches throughout the South and Midwest, including at leading ministries in Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, and in Arkansas. These included positions as Student Pastor, College Pastor, Young Adult Pastor, and Executive Pastor roles. Freddy has also served for some 20 years in part and full-time academic positions. More recently he served as Associate Vice President of Academics at Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City. Today he is Department Chair and Professor of Christian Education at Biola University in Greater Los Angeles.
Freddy teaches and oversees four academic degree programs (B.A., M.A., Ed.D., Ph.D.) as Chair of the Department of Christian Education at Talbot School of Theology. He oversees the university’s Digital Learning Committee, and is Co-Director of the Digital Ministry Conference held annually in Southern California. Freddy serves as the Executive Director of the Society of Professors in Christian Education (SPCE, formerly NAPCE). SPCE is an organization representing some 200 institutions of higher learning having academic educational ministry programs. Freddy speaks at various organizations and does consulting work, in addition to teaching academic courses as a Visiting Professor and doing various forms of video and audio studio work.

My Digital Media

Digital Media includes websites or applications (apps) that primarily host “content.” They are usually focused on sharing information– be it by sharing slides (SlideShare), blogs (WordPress), video blogs (YouTube, Vimeo), and so on. Digital Media is different than Social Media because social media primarily exists for basic interpersonal “communication” more than content. Social Media focuses on interconnectedness rather than primarily on inculcating information.

My Social Media

Social Media includes websites or applications (apps) whose primary purpose is “communication.” These sources are usually different delivery methods for sharing moment-by-moment events in our lives rather than transferring large amounts of information for systematic learning like Digital Media. Social Media is primarily “social,” meaning it’s especially used for socializing and getting in contact with others rather than transferring content.
